Managing Screen Time Over the Summer Holidays

When you have so many weeks of free time ahead of you, it’s easy to spend hours scrolling through your phone or playing games.

Spending time online is a fun way to unwind, especially when you don’t have to worry about school or college. Sometimes, though, too much screen time can leave you feeling a bit tired or sluggish. Finding a healthy balance can help you feel better and make the most of your summer.

Spotting the signs

It can be helpful to notice how you feel after using your devices for a while. You might find that your eyes feel a bit dry, or your neck feels stiff from sitting in the same spot. Sometimes, spending a long time online can affect your mood, making you feel a bit restless or grumpy. Pay attention to your body and your feelings when you are using your phone, tablet or console. If you notice you’re feeling a bit drained, it might be a good time to put the device down for a little while. Taking regular short breaks gives your mind and body a chance to refresh.

Making a loose plan

During the school term, your day has a clear routine that keeps you busy. When the holidays start, that routine disappears, and you can easily spend all your time on your devices. You don’t have to plan every single minute of your day, but having a few ideas of other things to do that don’t involve a screen can help. This could be something simple like playing outside, trying to make a new recipe, or meeting up with a friend. Having a mix of different activities makes the holidays feel longer and more exciting.

Changing your space

Sometimes we pick up our phones just because they are sitting right next to us. Making small changes to your environment can make it easier to take a break from technology. You could try leaving your phone in another room when you sit down to eat a meal. Charging your device away from your bed can also help you get a better night’s sleep. When your phone isn’t the first thing you see, you might find you naturally think about other things to do.

Connecting in different ways

Group chats and social media are brilliant for staying in touch with people over the summer. Sharing memes and updates keeps you connected, but mixing it up can be really nice too. You could suggest meeting up in a local park, going for a walk, or checking out a local event together. Doing things in person helps you make different types of memories with your friends. If your friends live far away, you could even try a phone call or a video chat while you both do something else, like building LEGO or painting.

Being kind to yourself

There is no perfect amount of screen time, and every day of the holidays will be different. Some days you might spend a lot of time gaming, and that is absolutely fine. The goal is just to find a balance that makes you feel happy and healthy.

If you feel like your screens are making you feel low or stressed, you can always talk to someone about it. Sharing how you feel with a friend, a family member, or a trusted adult can help you figure things out. Remember, you can always talk to Meic.
