Exams are officially over, and the long summer stretch is finally here. Here is how you can mix relaxing, finding new adventures, and handling the wait for results day.
You’ve just finished GCSEs, A-Levels, BTECs, or university exams – well done! But walking out of that last exam hall can feel strange. You might expect a massive burst of energy, but it is completely normal if you just feel exhausted instead. You’ve been working incredibly hard for months.

Let go of exams
It can be really tempting to check your answers online or talk with friends about what you wrote. However, trying to replay the exams in your head usually just causes extra worry. Whether you feel like they went well or not, the truth is that the exams are in the past now. You can’t change the answers you wrote down.
If you find yourself feeling deeply worried or stuck thinking about a specific paper, you don’t have to deal with that stress alone. Reaching out to a Meic adviser can be a really helpful way to talk through those feelings and get them out of your head so you can properly relax.
Have a proper rest
You don’t have to jump straight into a huge project or a busy schedule. Give yourself permission to just breathe.
You’ve probably been dealing with high levels of cortisol (the hormone your body makes when you feel stressed). It takes a little while for your body to realise that the pressure is off.
Sleeping in, watching your favourite shows, or spending some time outdoors are great ways to recharge. After some time chilling out, you might start to feel a bit bored. This is completely normal! The structure of school, college or uni is gone, and the summer can suddenly look very long. That is the perfect time to think about light, fun ways to fill your days.

Volunteer
If you want to do something meaningful but don’t want the pressure of a formal contract, volunteering is a great option. You can give some of your time to help out at a local animal shelter, support a youth group, or help tidy up a community garden. It is a lovely way to meet new people who care about the same things you do.
Even though you won’t be paid, it gives you something excellent to put on your CV. Employers love to see that you used your free time to help others. It shows you have teamwork skills and can stick to a commitment, all while doing something that helps your community!
Earn money
If you want to get some extra cash in your pocket, looking for a part-time summer job might be the way to go. Plenty of places look for extra help during the summer months, especially in shops, cafes, cinemas, and tourist spots.
Working a summer job teaches you a lot about the adult world. You learn how to manage your own money, how to talk to customers, and how to work in a fast-paced environment. It can give you a massive boost of confidence.
If you don’t want a traditional job, you could look into casual work in your neighbourhood. Dog walking, babysitting, or helping a neighbour mow their lawn are great ways to earn money on your own terms.

Manage the wait for Results Day
As August gets closer, you might find that you start to feel a bit nervous again. It helps to remember that everyone is in the same boat. Try to limit how much time you spend scrolling through social media looking at posts about results. Instead, plan a nice activity for results day itself so you have something to look forward to, no matter what is inside the envelope.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you don’t have to carry that weight by yourself. Talk to a family member, a friend, or a trusted adult about how you’re feeling. Sharing a worry usually makes it feel a lot smaller.
If the wait for results is getting to you, or if you just want to talk through your options, the team at Meic is always here to listen and support you. You can contact us by phone, WhatsApp message, text, or online chat.
