Some people say AI will create millions of new jobs, while others say it’s going to take over everything. It’s totally normal to feel a bit of ‘AI anxiety’ about it. But the reality is more about how jobs are changing rather than just disappearing.
Is AI actually taking over?
You might have heard about AI software that can do things like write basic code, organise schedules, or even answer questions for customers. Because of this, some of the tasks that used to be given to new starters are being done by bots. But here’s the thing: AI still makes mistakes, it gets confused by ‘human’ problems, and it definitely doesn’t have your personality.
Instead of robots replacing everyone, most companies are looking for people who can work with AI. They want people who can handle the human side of things, like talking to a frustrated customer or coming up with a brand-new idea. While AI gets the boring, repetitive bits done faster, it can free up more of your time to focus on the bits it can’t master.

Using AI to get hired
One of the biggest changes lately is how we apply for jobs. A lot of big companies now use AI to scan your CV, but you can use AI to help you too! You can use tools like ChatGPT or Gemini to help you practice interview questions or fix the structure of your CV.
But be careful: if you just copy and paste an application written entirely by AI, it’s usually pretty easyto spot. When you’re applying for a job, remember that the person hiring is looking for a human connection. They want to hear your voice and your real-life experience. You can include information about that time you volunteered, a project you were proud of at school, or a hobby you’re interested in. Think of AI as your research assistant – it can help you get started, but you need to be the one to finish it with your own style.
The skills that are ‘AI-Proof’
As AI gets better at technical stuff, the things that make us human are actually becoming more valuable. AI is great at spotting and working with patterns, but it’s rubbish at empathy. Employers are looking for people who are good at:
- Emotional Intelligence: Understanding how people feel and how to work in a team
- Problem Solving: Knowing what to do when things don’t go to plan
- Critical Thinking: Checking if the information that AI gives you is actually true or just a ‘hallucination’ (when AI makes things up)
Focusing on these skills is the best way to make sure you’re ready for the future, no matter what new tech comes out.
